Background

Global Innovation and Technology Alliance (GITA) has been promoted jointly by Department of Science & Technology (DST), Government of India and Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) for promotion and facilitation of international industry research & development programmes in India.

GITA was launched in May 2007 by Hon'ble Minister for Science & technology and Earth Sciences, Mr. Kapil Sibal, aims to make the programmes more goal oriented with greater participation from industry and academia. The initiative is being steered by Dr. T Ramasami, Secretary, DST amd Mr. KV Kamath, President CII.

GITA aims at enhancing technology competitiveness of India Industry & Institutions through joint development, technology transfer and joint ventures. GITA is a unique public-private-partnership model of executing government programmes through an arms length organisation having a professional delivery mechanism. Funding support from government is facilitated for industrial R&D by GITA, which is responsible to effectively strategise, promote and execute programmes within a target time frame. To implement theses programmes it is working in collaboration with counterpart similar agencies in the partner countries.

Governing Body

An apex Governing Council with Hon'ble Minister for Science & Technology and Earth Sciences as Chief Patron, Secretary DST and President (CII) as Chairman and Co-Chairman respectively and with representatives from industry, government and institution lays down the policy guidelines for GITA and monitors its progress time to time. An Executive Committee under the Chairmanship of CEO, GITA will oversee the administrative and financial matters of GITA.

  • Country research and mapping vis-à-vis India's need/priority
  • Managing bilateral/multilateral collaborative R&D Programmes and Partnership Development Activities like exploratory missions of scientific delegations, collaborative workshops, study visits etc.
  • Support to Indian Industry and Institutions to network with Global S&T organizations and industries
  • Providing information and hand-holding support to foreign investors in R&D in India
  • Establishment of Joint Centres of Excellence
